2 detained after search for suspect leads to Miami street closure; NW 17th Ave. back open near 20th Street

Police said they have detained two people in Miami following an hours-long search for a suspect wanted in an attempted homicide.

The search led to Miami Police’s SWAT team to close down roads in a major part of the city, Wednesday night.

At around 6 p.m., armored vehicles and heavily armored SWAT members completely closed down the area of Northwest 17th Avenue, between 18th and 20th streets, in search of the suspect.

Several officers were seen handling long guns and gearing up in tactical gear.

“Come out with your hands up. This is the Miami Police Department,” said an officer over a SWAT loudspeaker.

Police narrowed their search to an address.

“All the occupants of 1640 NW 19th Terrace, come out with your hands up,” said the officer on the loudspeaker.

It all began at around 4:30 p.m., and the scene remained active until around 7 p.m.

Police were seen focused on a white car, searching it, but they

The police department only said they were assisting in a Miami Springs case and that they were able to take two people into custody.

All of this happened as families watched, waited and worried, like Ana Arias and her two young daughters, 10 and 12, who had to sit in their car before they could go home, waiting until the scene to clear.

“They were freaking out,” she said about her children. “They were both in the car. They were like, ‘Mom, what’s going on. I’m scared, I’m scared!”

Police said the two people they have taken into custody are being detained for questioning. It remains unclear whether or not they will face any charges.
